Mirabilis Villa is located in Karya, in the green mountainous heart of Lefkada — an ideal starting point for combining village life, nature and the island’s famous west-coast beaches.
KARYA · OUR VILLAGE
Just about 20 minutes by car from Lefkada Town, Karya reveals a different side of the island. Set amid lush vegetation at the foot of Mount Elati, the village is known for its huge plane trees, well-preserved stone houses with tiled roofs and picturesque cobbled lanes. Its lively central square is the natural meeting point of the village, especially in summer beneath the deep shade of the plane trees.
Karya is famous for the unique “Karsaniki” embroidery technique, developed in the early 20th century by Maria Stavraka, known as Koutsochero. Original works and the story of this local tradition can be discovered at the museum dedicated to her. Also worth seeing are the village’s Phonograph–Gramophone–Radio Museum, the church of Agios Spyridon, Agia Paraskevi with its carved wooden iconostasis, and the historic Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos just outside the village. If you visit in August, look out for the traditional reenactment of the Lefkadian village wedding.
